"Fall Foods and the Sin of Gluttony"
Hello, listeners in Japan! This is Kaorun coming to you from Seattle.
Today, we're talking about "Autumn Foods and Appetite."
In Japan, you might enjoy matsutake mushrooms or chestnuts in this season. But here in the U.S., it's all about pumpkins! We put pumpkin in everything—pies, lattes, and even dog treats!
Speaking of food, there's an interesting English word: "gluttony." It means eating too much, and in Christian tradition, it's considered one of the Seven Deadly Sins. The adjective form is "gluttonous."
Here’s a fun phrase: "Eyes bigger than your stomach." What do you think this means? We use it when someone takes more food than they can actually eat. For example, "I was so gluttonous at the buffet. My eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach!" This phrase can also be used metaphorically, not just about food, but when someone takes on more than they can handle, whether it's with their time or abilities. Isn't that interesting? Imagine—your eyes are bigger than your stomach!
So, while it's great to enjoy delicious autumn foods, let's not be too gluttonous. Don't let your eyes be bigger than your stomach! As we say in English, moderation is key.
This is Kaorun, signing off from cloudy Seattle.
Enjoy your day!
