I came up with another major reason why Canada is not as strong in figure skating as the United States. In the U.S., figure skating has a large market as a form of show business. If you become a top-level figure skater, you can make a lot of money in the American entertainment industry. Not only in figure skating, but also in basketball, football, and other professional sports, the market is huge. Because the professional sports and show business industries are so large, children and their families aim to reach the top with dreams of great financial success. However, Canada has a much smaller population, so the show business market is extremely small in comparison. Hockey is a national sport and a major professional industry where large amounts of money are involved, so even though it is

expensive, many kids and young people play in it. Figure skating, on the other hand, has such a small show business market in Canada that even if someone becomes an elite skater, their career path afterward is often limited to coaching. In that sense, there may not be the same kind of big dream attached to it in Canada. That could be one reason why the number of competitive figure skaters is relatively small. Japan is also very strong at a high level in figure skating, but nationwide the number of participants is extremely small, and only a limited number of people in certain regions take part in the sport. However, because Japan has a large population, ice shows and related entertainment can generate more revenue than in Canada. In that sense, perhaps there is more of a dream for figure

skaters in Japan.
