Its distinctive feature is the large crack seen on its side. It is said to have occurred during the civil unrest of the Muromachi period, and it is affectionately called the "Nishi no Kyo Koware Kane" or "The Broken Bell of the Western Capital." Despite its cracks, the "Koware Kane" is carefully repaired and still rings every day at 5 p.m., telling the time. You can also watch the live streaming of this event on YouTube.
