While vegetables and fruits have relatively high rates, Japan heavily relies on imports for wheat, soybeans, and other staples. While this reliance on imports has led to an abundance of diverse foods in Japan, why is a low food self-sufficiency rate a problem? Several potential issues arise. For instance, global abnormal weather events, conflicts, or pandemics could increase the risk of disruptions to food imports. Furthermore, a significant dependence on imports makes the nation susceptible to fluctuations in international food prices, potentially making it difficult to stably secure the food its citizens need. From an environmental perspective, the increased carbon dioxide emissions from the transportation of imported foods are also a concern that cannot be overlooked. Regarding rice self-sufficiency specifically, changes in Japan's dietary culture, such as eating more imported wheat and less rice than before, could undermine the current 100% self-sufficiency rate. In Europe and elsewhere, agriculture and fisheries are often protected and well-supported by national policies from a food security standpoint. In Japan, there are many policy-based measures that could be implemented, such as utilizing abandoned farmland and supporting farmers. It's understandable that the younger generation, having witnessed Japan's decline since birth, might feel powerless.
