Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.

Yesterday, I happened to watch a TV variety show hosted by Koichi Domoto and Shigeaki Kato.

It features a wide range of entertaining topics.

What was on at that time was about whether banana peels are really slippery, and apparently there was a person who had actually looked into it.

He was a professor at Kitasato University who had studied it using a lot of bananas.

He came to the conclusion that when a banana peel is stepped on, tiny capsules containing a gel-like substance are crushed, and the liquid that comes out makes the peel very slippery.

It is said to be comparable to skis on snow.

This study was significant because it could be applied to reducing friction in artificial joints.

Eventually, this study won the Ig Nobel Prize in 2014.

From banana peels to better artificial joints — isn't that amazing?

Watching this, I felt two things.

First, it is important to question everything.

Second, however trivial something may seem, if we dig deep into it, we can arrive at the truth.

That's it. See you next time.

Thinking Fox

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.

Yesterday I was talking with my wife about recent trends in Japanese hit songs.

Apparently, the intros of hit songs have been getting shorter because people now prioritize time efficiency — a concept Japanese people call "time performance," or "taipa".

I thought that might be true, so I looked it up online and found a study investigating this trend.

It analyzed 500 hit songs — the top 10 songs from each of the past 50 years.

While intros averaged 18 seconds in the 1990s, they had dropped to just 9.6 seconds by the 2020s.

The average song length was 293.7 seconds in the 1990s, then declined steadily to 242.2 seconds in the 2020s — a reduction of roughly 20%.

To be sure, “Lemon" by Kenshi Yonezu has no intro at all, but it's really appealing.

Still, I believe longer songs are worth listening to, even if they're less time-efficient.

Take "Love Phantom" by B'z, for example — I'd be sad if it didn't have that iconic intro.

Likewise, if "Graduation" by Yutaka Ozaki were only three minutes long, I'd want more.

So, I personally prefer longer intros and longer songs.

Which do you prefer?

That's it. See you next time

Thinking Fox

Just a one-minute English speech by thinking FOX.

If you could get a monetary reward for reading books, how much do you think would be appropriate?
In Singapore, an initiative was launched to reward people for reading books as part of a campaign to promote reading habits.
The idea behind it was that reading habits among the population had declined with the rise of short videos.
So, if people read for more than 15 minutes a day, they earn a point,
and once they collect enough points, they can exchange them for a monetary reward.

I think this initiative is probably controversial, but before we get into it, how much do you think the reward actually is?
After reading for 50 days, they can get just one Singapore dollar — about 120 yen. That's too low.
If I were a Singaporean, I wonder how much it would take to encourage me to read more.
Putting aside where the money comes from, I’d say between 500 and 1,000 yen for every five books.
That's because it is enough to buy another book on Kindle.
It creates a positive cycle, where reading a book leads to buying the next.

That said, I don't think this initiative makes sense in the first place. The true reward for reading is not money, but the knowledge and the fulfillment we gain.

That's it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.

Oh my god. Even though the long holiday is just starting, a typhoon is approaching.

What concerns me most is which way this typhoon goes over the next few days.

So I was looking at the typhoon track forecast released by the Japan Meteorological Agency（気象庁）.

This chart is often shown on the weather news, so many people see it.

It can be found on the website, and I found it useful to look at it in detail.

So I want to share it with you.

In this chart, the current center of the typhoon is marked with an X, and it is surrounded by a red circle and a yellow circle.

These circles represent the current storm area and the strong wind area, respectively.

And the biggest concern for many people is probably the future movement of the typhoon.

Namely, the area surrounded by the white and red lines.

The area surrounded by the white line is the forecast circle.

It reflects the possible range of the typhoon's center, with a 70% probability.

And the area surrounded by the red line is the storm warning area.

It reflects the possible range of the storm area over the next five days.

Please note that these areas don't reflect the actual size of the typhoon itself.

They are only probability indicators.

And here's something new I learned.

On the website, I found a button that shows the details of this probability.

If you select the middle toggle labeled "probability of entering the storm area," the details of the probability are represented by purple, red, and yellow ranges, split at the 30% and 70% cutoffs.

Moreover, if you tap a region, you can see how the probability of being in the storm area changes over the coming days.

This information would be useful for planning your schedule, so give it a try.

That's it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.

Yesterday, the squad for the Japan national football team was announced. This was the first selection since the last World Cup.

Of course, I want those who were the key players on the team at the last World Cup to play well.

But I'm also looking forward to see new talent, such as Ryunosuke Sato and Yuito Suzuki.

I'm especially keeping an eye on Kuryu Matsuki.

His career went smoothly from Aomori Yamada High School to FC Tokyo and then to Europe.

But last season he couldn't get much playing time at Southampton in England, and that became a big setback for him.

Recently he overcame it, coming back as a starter on the team.

His strong points are mental toughness and physical strength.

Moreover, he was originally a central midfielder, but he can also play as a forward or right winger.

So I'm looking forward to seeing which position he plays on the Japan national team.

The only concern is Mitoma. Where is he? What is he doing now?

He is probably still injured, and he still cannot play for his club, Brighton, in England.

When he's in top form, he is explosive on offense.

So it's disappointing, but I want him to rest well and focus on recovering.

That's it. See you next time.

Thinking Fox

I go to Chocozap to work out regularly, and I'm now curious about a system called Friendly Membership.

It's a system in which members can get a discount on their fee by helping clean the gym or restock supplies regularly.

The first time I noticed it was several months ago.

When I was working out at Chocozap, I saw a strange man.

He was doing something odd, going back and forth in the gym.

And after that, he also worked out, then left the gym.

At that time, I didn't know who he was and what he was doing.

But after learning about a system called Friendly Membership, I realized he was probably a member of this program.

I read the terms and conditions regarding this Friendly Membership program on Chocozap's website.

It seems each activity takes about 15 minutes, and four times activity per month lead to 1,000 yen discount — and if eight times, 2,000 yen off.

Since the standard membership fee at Chocozap is about 3,000 yen per month, this discount is pretty significant.

Moreover, it may lead to the motivation to keep going to Chocozap.

So, I’m wondering about applying for this membership.

That's it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.

Speaking of crepe myrtles（サルスベリ）, called sarusuberi in Japanese, which comes to mind — the smooth trunk or the lovely blossoms?

At least for me, it was definitely the trunk.

The bare surface of the trunk is slippy and is said to be difficult to climb even for monkeys.

Of course, monkeys don't actually slip, but I've had such an impression since I was a child.

But the other day, when I was looking at the crepe myrtle in the garden at my apartment, I noticed a significant misconception I had.

It was like this.

What I regarded as an individual blossom was actually only a petal（花びら）, and what I thought of as a cluster of blossoms was actually just one blossom.

The base of each petal was as thin as a thread, and the petals themselves were crinkled（縮れて）.

It was almost like a sparkler（線香花火）.

After finding that, my image changed completely.

I’m sad because summer is going to end and we have to say goodbye to the crepe myrtle blossoms as well.

That's it. See you next time.

Thinking Fox

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.

Yesterday, I went to a tennis school near my house.

The class right before mine was for junior high school students.

So, when I used the locker room to change into my training wear, some junior high school kids were also using it.

Yesterday, in the locker room, two junior high school kids were talking about something that had happened the day before, and I was listening to them.

According to them, he had some kind of issue with his homeroom teacher.

But he was very reluctant to study, so he shut himself in the toilet for two hours, where he was absorbed in chatting on LINE and playing “BUROSUTA”.

I had no idea what the word "BUROSUTA" meant, and I wanted to know it.

What is that? Is that a nice thing that they are absorbed in for as long as two hours?

So I browsed the web, asked ChatGPT, and searched for it on YouTube. And I found that it is a smartphone game.

It is a real-time, 3-on-3-based team action game that is popular among junior high school kids.

One match takes a very short time, and there is a wide variety of characters they can choose.

I watched it on YouTube. In the game, the players were moving back and forth on the stage together with other characters.

I thought it was a little similar to that of my generation's popular game, Bomberman.

I have never played games since I became an adult.

But I found that it might be more interesting than I expected, and if I were a child, I might be absorbed in it as well.

That's it. See you next time.

Thinking Fox

The CEO of Anthropic addressed the possibility that AI could pose a risk of destroying humanity in the near future.

He also insisted that the pace of AI development should be slowed down worldwide.

In particular, he said that RSI, which stands for recursive self-improvement, is the greatest risk.

This refers to AI's ability to improve itself.

I totally agree with this statement.

Honestly, I'm also very scared of being threatened by AI.

And I have two concerns.

First, I wonder if it is enough to slow the pace of AI development, rather than stopping it entirely.

Second, I wonder whether a variety of AI companies can keep in step with each other toward that goal.

AI itself is very useful, and I also depend on AI in various aspects of my life.

So I have very mixed, complex feelings about this, but I think the regulation should definitely be implemented.

That's it. See you next time.

Thinking Fox

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.

What do you eat for lunch when you're in a rush and barely have time?

Personally, I often stop by a station soba shop, especially my favorite chain, Irorian Kiraku.

And I usually order kakiage tentama soba. What makes it so good is the combination — the chewy soba, the crispy kakiage, and the rich egg coating everything.

But I still wonder which is better — stirring the egg into the soup, or pouring it over the kakiage.

Personally, I prefer pouring it over the kakiage, not into the soup.

But when I get my bowl from the staff, the egg is already sitting next to the kakiage.

Once the egg is sitting there, it's a little difficult to move it onto the kakiage.

So, if anyone knows the right way to eat kakiage tentama soba, especially what to do with the egg, please let me know.

That's it. See you next time.

Thinking Fox

<itunes:summary>Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.

Just a one-minute English speech by thinking FOX.

Xenotransplantation（異種移植） means transplanting organs from animals into humans, unlike conventional human-to-human transplantation. This article reports a case of a patient who underwent a pig-to-human kidney xenotransplant. For the first six months, rejection remained under control, but once an infection developed and immunosuppressive therapy（免疫抑制療法） had to be tapered, it became difficult to maintain graft（移植片） function.Apparently, microthrombosis（微小血栓） had developed in the capillaries（微小血管）.Nevertheless, this case suggests that pig kidney xenotransplantation can serve as a bridge to allotransplantation（同種移植） until a suitable human donor becomes available.

Given the current shortage of human donors, these advances are highly significant. On the other hand, when it comes to the lung, the barriers to xenotransplantation are said to be much greater. So I hope further progress will be made in this field.

That's it. See you next time.

Thinking FOX

What do you think about costume runs?In a podcast I listened to, I heard about a running race in Kansas where people dressed up as superheroes. The name of the event was a bit of a mouthful: "The Totally Awesome CASA Costume 5K."It was an event designed to raise awareness of children in foster care.In Japan, I sometimes see costumed runners in races, dressed as Frieza from Dragon Ball or Spider-Man.

I think costume running is fun in itself, but I wouldn't really want to try it myself. That's because wearing a costume might be fine in the early stages of the race, but later on it would get much harder to keep running in costume, especially in the final stretch. And also, if I saw a superhero running in pain, out of breath, and only just finishing the race, I'd have mixed feelings, because I want heroes to stay cool, just like they look on TV.Frieza would fly rather than run, and Spider-Man would swing from building to building on his webs, never looking out of breath.

That said, it's a good thing that people get so excited about dressing up as their favorite heroes. So here's my idea. How about race walking in costume instead? That way, the heroes' image wouldn't be ruined.

That's it. See you next time.

Thinking FOX

Just a one minute English speech by Thinking Fox.
Yesterday was sports day at my son's kindergarten.
When it comes to sports day, one of the main events is the running race.
In this event, parents can wait at the finish line and watch their children run toward them.
Last year and the year before, my son kept running past the finish line and ran straight into my arms.
So this year, I was looking forward to seeing the same scene again.
The teacher blew the whistle and he started running.
Watching him run, it hit me that he had become so much faster than last year.
My son finished, and I got ready to catch him in my arms, just like last year.
But then he just ran past me without even looking, as if I wasn't even there, and returned to where the other kids were sitting.
It stung a little, but I thought it was also a sign of his growth and independence.
I hope he keeps growing up well and healthy from now on.
That's it. See you next time.

Thinking FOX

Simple habits like washing your hands and gargling are important as basic precautions. So, take care of yourselves and stay safe this flu season.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.

It is September 1st, and summer is coming to an end.
I sometimes see a cicada（セミ） playing dead（死んだふりをしている） at my front door.
It's lying upside down as if it's dead.
But when I get close to it, it suddenly flies off.
These days, it's apparently called a "cicada bomb" or a "semi-final."
From what I've heard, the cicada is on the verge of death but is mustering（奮い起こす） its remaining strength.

It doesn't bother me, but it startles my wife and kids.
So, here's how to tell a dead cicada from one that is just playing dead.
The key is in its legs.
If its legs are tucked in, it's really dead, so it won't be flying away anymore.
But if its legs are spread open, it's still alive and could fly off.
This is because insects' muscles contract（拘縮する） after death, which causes their legs to curl inward.

That's it. See you next time.

Thinking FOX

Thinking FOX

I came across some shocking news.It is about Ritsu Doan, the number 10 for the Japanese national football team.Apparently, he may be close to moving to the Saudi Arabian League.I hope it is not true.Of course, I also have respect for the Saudi Arabian League, but it is true that the level of the league is not as high as major European leagues such as the Premier League or the Bundesliga.

And I want him to remain a key player for the Japanese national team at the next World Cup.To that end, he must remain in Europe. But whatever the result is, I'm a fan of him, and I will respect his decision.

That's it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.

My son and I often play shogi together.

The first time we played was about 2 years ago, and since then he has been getting stronger day by day.

And now, even though I give him a handicap of playing without kaku and hisha, the strongest pieces in the game, I would lose if I let my guard down.

Recently, my son found another opponent.

It is my daughter. My daughter is one year older than my son, but not as familiar with shogi as my son.

On the first day, my daughter said with confidence that she was definitely stronger than my son. In the end, she lost to him.

On the second day, she lost again, but she was still saying that she wasn't going all out（本気を出していない） to save face（面子を保つ）.

On the third day, I saw her happily saying that my son had given her a handicap by playing without Hisha and Kaku.

I found it very lovely and funny because the change in her attitude was very rapid.

Even so, my daughter looked happy playing shogi, and my son also looked pleased that he had found an opponent he could beat.

So from now on, I hope my son and daughter enjoy playing shogi together.

That's it. See you next time.

In America, an outbreak of Cyclospora（サイクロスポラ） is a growing concern among consumers. In particular, American taco chain Taco Bell was hit by a temporary decline in same-store sales（既存店売上高） because the chopped lettuce was contaminated with（〜に汚染された） it.Cyclospora is a protozoan（原虫） that parasitizes（寄生する） the intestines（腸）, causing diarrhea（下痢） after an incubation period（潜伏期間） of about a week.It has also been found in Japan, but there has never been an outbreak here.

Speaking of Taco Bell, I've heard of it, but I've never been there. When I browsed the menu on their website, there was a wide variety of tacos and burritos, which looked so appetizing（食欲をそそる）.Among them, the Beef Crunchwrap Supreme looked really delicious. It is a tortilla wrapped around a mix of cheese, vegetables, beef, and sour cream. What a tempting combination it is.If I get the chance, I want to try it.

That's it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.

Meta, the company behind the largest social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has faced lawsuits（訴訟） over harming children's mental health.
Meta settled the lawsuit by paying $18 billion and promising changes to its platforms.
Namely, it promised to set daily time limits on children's use.
Other things like alcohol or tobacco also have age restrictions.
So, I think it was appropriate that time limits were imposed on children's use of social media platforms.

But what I am concerned about is that the risk of addiction is not the matter of children alone.
Adults may also easily become addicted to it, which can lead to mental health problems.
Even though adults can freely use it, we should be mindful of our self-control.

That's it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.

Researchers have developed an AI app for COPD patients.
It analyzes a patient's voice and detects signs of acute exacerbation（急性増悪）.
COPD is a chronic lung disease usually caused by smoking, and patients often develop dyspnea on exertion（労作性呼吸困難*）.
Sometimes, a patient's condition rapidly worsens, which is called an acute exacerbation.
A delay in seeing a doctor is likely to become critical.
So, this app is useful for shortening this delay.

When I looked into it, I found that COPD patients' voice pitch tends to become a little higher in the early phase of an exacerbation.
This app still seems to be under development, but I hope it will be available for clinical use as soon as possible.

That's it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency（総務省消防庁） released data showing that this July, 41,000 people in Japan were rushed to the hospital due to heat stroke（熱中症）.
This was the third-highest number of emergency transports on record for July, after 2018 and 2024.
Personally, this year feels a little cooler than last year.
But still, there were several days when the temperature exceeded 35 degrees.
And I also feel like I've noticed more men in the city using sun umbrellas, including myself.

To prevent heat stroke, frequent hydration and the use of air conditioning are required.
Please stay safe, everyone.
As for me, I’m especially anxious about my son's soccer practice because it's held on weekday afternoons.

That's it. See you next time.
