Have you ever heard of the Swedish word Allemansrätten?
In this episode, I’m talking about this unique Swedish concept, often called the Right of Public Access or the freedom to roam.
In Sweden, people can enjoy nature freely, even on privately owned land, as long as they follow one important principle:
“Don’t disturb, don’t destroy.”
You can walk through nature, camp for a short time, pick wild berries and mushrooms, and even swim in lakes and in the sea.
When I visit the Swedish countryside or islands with my Swedish family, we often pick blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries along the way. Sometimes we eat them right there, or take them home to make cakes and homemade jam.
In the fall, many Swedes go mushroom picking in the forest. It’s even common to have a special mushroom knife with a little brush for cleaning the mushrooms.
You can also swim in lakes and in the sea. Unlike Japan, Sweden doesn’t necessarily have an official beach-opening season or lifeguards at every beach, so you need to take responsibility for your own safety.
When I first learned about Allemansrätten, I was surprised that people could enjoy nature even on privately owned land.
But I think it reflects something beautiful about the Swedish relationship with nature.
Nature is not just somewhere you visit occasionally. It’s a part of everyday life. And nature doesn’t belong to just one person. It belongs to everyone.
For me, Allemansrätten is about freedom, nature, and responsibility.
I hope you enjoy this episode!
