【Exploring an Aging Society #83】A Life's Journey Person-in-Life Approach Series | 05 Do you know what has mattered most to that person throughout their life? We often see people as they are today. Their age, health conditions, physical abilities, and the things they can or can no longer do. But how much do we know about the life they have lived? What work did they do? Who shared their daily life? What responsibilities did they carry? What brought them joy? In dementia care, an older person may suddenly say, "I have to go to work." Rather than dismissing this as confusion, we might consider whether their past work, responsibilities, or sense of purpose are relevant. Of course, we cannot assume that past experiences explain every behavior. That is why we need to listen, observe, and engage in dialogue with the person and, when appropriate, those close to them. The Person-in-Life Approach seeks to understand a person through the continuity of their life — past, present, and future. Understanding someone's life journey helps us explore how they wish to live from now on. We do not ask about the past merely to collect memories. We listen to their story to better understand what matters to them today and tomorrow. Perhaps you could ask someone close to you: "What has been most important to you in your life?" Thinking about an aging society through everyday life.
