【Exploring an Aging Society #87】How We Provide Support Person-in-Life Approach | Series 09 Are we helping so much that we take away someone's abilities? When you help someone, how do you decide how much assistance to provide? In caregiving, we sometimes do things for people because it is faster, safer, or more convenient. But a person may still be able to set the table, choose their clothes, or participate in everyday activities, even if they need more time. At the same time, independence should never mean forcing someone to do everything alone. Pain, fatigue, changing abilities, and personal preferences all matter. For me, good support begins with understanding the person's life. What does this person want to do? What would they prefer to do themselves? What kind of help would they welcome? Support may mean assisting, waiting, observing, adapting the environment, or connecting someone with professional care. The right amount of assistance may also change from day to day. That is why support requires ongoing dialogue and reflection. Our goal should not be to do everything for someone, nor to make them do everything independently. It is to support their choices, abilities, dignity, and way of life. Before helping, have we asked what the person actually wants? Thinking about an aging society through everyday life.
