This is partly due to a lack of knowledge, but more significantly, it's likely due to a cultural background where such a discussion climate hasn't been fully cultivated. Let's first use English as a convenient tool to familiarize ourselves with how social and political discussions progress. Step 1: Listen to the English version and get an idea of how to structure opinions and connect conversations. Step 2: Listen to the same content in Japanese. Step 3: Try to form your own opinion on the same topic in either English or Japanese. Ok, this time, let’s discuss the Seniority-Based System. English Version The seniority-based employment system has been dominant in Japan's employment practices, but recently, it seems that elements of merit-based pay have been considerably incorporated. What are your thoughts on the seniority-based system? For younger generations who are highly capable and motivated, the seniority-based system, which doesn't place much emphasis on the treatment of younger employees, doesn't have much appeal. However, if one were to stay with a single company until retirement, the seniority-based system, which firmly guarantees treatment for middle-aged and older employees whose physical strength and energy decline, also has its merits. However, the premise of lifetime employment itself is now collapsing, so along with that, the advantages of seniority-based systems are becoming less appealing to younger people. My father built a house with his retirement allowance. My seniors also bought condominiums by taking out long-term loans. I think this is precisely the benefit of the seniority-based system. However, if it risks dampening the work motivation of highly capable young people who contribute the most to the company, or if employees hesitate to take childcare leave because their continuous years of service would be interrupted, then the seniority-based system might be undesirable for certain employees.
