The history of Ukraine has its roots in Kyivan Rus', a state established in the late 9th century with Kyiv as its capital. Ukraine sees Kyivan Rus' as the beginning of its own history. However, Russia also considers Kyivan Rus' as its origin, and these differing historical perceptions of a common origin are one of the fundamental causes of the current conflict between the two countries. In the 13th century, after the Mongol invasion, Kyivan Rus' collapsed, and Ukraine temporarily lost its existence as an independent state. By the 14th century, most of Ukraine came under the rule of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In the 17th century, through the Khmelnytsky Uprising, Ukraine gained independence from Poland. However, later, much of Ukraine became part of the Russian Empire.
