【Exploring an Aging Society #88】What the Person Truly Wants Person-in-Life Approach | Series 10 Have you asked what the person truly wants to do? When we support someone, how well do we understand their wishes? In caregiving, families and professionals sometimes make decisions with the best intentions. Because it is safer. Because it seems healthier. Because it is part of an established routine. But is that what the person actually wants? Imagine an older adult who does not want to go outside. Is walking difficult? Are they afraid of falling? Is there nowhere they particularly want to go? Would they enjoy going out with someone they trust? Behavior alone does not always reveal a person's wishes. For people living with dementia or communication difficulties, understanding their preferences may require careful attention to facial expressions, gestures, personal history, relationships, and everyday routines. And even when we believe we understand, we should avoid making assumptions. Listen. Observe. Engage in dialogue. Reflect. And check again. A person's wishes can change over time. Good support is not about making every decision on someone's behalf. It is about helping them participate in decisions about their own life. Are we truly listening to what the person wants? Thinking about an aging society through everyday life.
