【Exploring the Aging Society #90】Sleep Care
10-Part Series | Understanding Daily Life Through Sleep
Have We Truly Been Caring for People's Sleep?
In elderly care, we support many aspects of daily life, including eating, toileting, bathing, and mobility.
But what about sleep?
We provide nighttime monitoring, toileting assistance, repositioning, and regular rounds.
Yet have we paid enough attention to whether people actually sleep well and how they feel when they wake up?
Sleep is not determined by nighttime care alone.
Morning sunlight, daytime activities, meals, conversations, human relationships, physical discomfort, anxiety, and the sleeping environment all influence sleep.
This is why I propose moving beyond conventional nighttime care toward a broader concept: Sleep Care.
Sleep Care is not simply about making someone sleep.
It is about understanding and supporting the whole person and their daily life so that they can sleep peacefully and wake up feeling comfortable.
Sleep duration and sensor measurements can provide useful information. But we must also listen to the person's own experience.
To understand someone's sleep is to understand their life.
In this new 10-part series, we will explore Sleep Care from the perspective of dignity, daily living, and well-aging.
Rethinking the Aging Society Through Daily Life.
