Choosing for Yourself Matters More Than Simply Not Eating
Thinking About an Aging Society Through Food
“The food is bad for your health, so you shouldn’t eat it.”
The more we learn about food and health, the more often we encounter messages like this.
Through learning about the concept of “Four Poisons and Five Evils,” I have personally changed my diet and reduced vegetable oils, sweets, wheat, and dairy products.
But there is an important distinction.
What I choose for myself and what I make someone else choose are not the same thing.
Food is more than nutrition.
It can be pleasure.
It can hold memories of family.
It can represent the taste of one’s hometown.
It can carry a person’s life story.
So I do not want to begin with prohibition.
First, understand what you eat.
Notice how it relates to your body and daily life.
Talk about it.
Reflect on it.
And then, choose for yourself.
Whether to eat or not to eat should ultimately remain a personal choice.
Even as we grow older, and even when we need care, the ability to choose should remain part of our lives.
That, for me, is an essential part of Well-Aging.
