【Aging Society Exploration 069】
Don’t Bring “Health Through Eating Less” Directly into Older Age
“Eating less is healthier.”
“Two meals a day are enough.”
“Longer fasting periods are better for you.”
We hear these ideas more and more often.
But should we apply them to older adults in exactly the same way?
As we age, our bodies change. Appetite may decrease, muscle mass may decline, chewing and swallowing can become more difficult, and physical activity may decrease.
So rather than starting with, “What should this person stop eating?” I want to begin with a different question:
“How is this person eating and living today?”
What do they eat?
How much do they eat?
Who do they eat with?
Do they still enjoy their meals?
Have their weight, strength, or daily activities changed?
This does not mean that older people should simply eat more.
The point is not to impose a popular health method on someone’s life.
The point is to understand changes in that person’s body and everyday life.
Eating is not the goal.
Not eating is not the goal either.
The question is how food can support a person in continuing to live as themselves.

Today, once again, we explore life through food.
