Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox. I came across a news report saying that a female technician in Russia had died of plague. Apparently, the Russian technician had accidentally broken a test tube containing plague bacteria, which led to her infection. Plague is an infectious disease called "pesuto" in Japanese, and it is generally regarded as a thing of the past. Plague is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, and it has caused several pandemics throughout history. In particular, it caused a devastating pandemic in the Middle Ages, when it was feared as the Black Death. About a third of Europe's population is said to have died of it. Centuries later, in 1894, Shibasaburo Kitazato and Alexandre Yersin independently identified the bacterium responsible for the disease. Plague has not been completely eradicated; it remains endemic in several countries, most notably Madagascar and DR Congo. In Japan, no cases have been reported since 1927. Plague has three main forms: bubonic, pneumonic, and septicaemic plague. They mainly affect the lymph nodes, the lungs, and the bloodstream, respectively. Pneumonic plague is much more dangerous than bubonic plague. It can develop secondary to bubonic plague, and it can also spread from person to person through respiratory droplets. Reportedly, the Russian technician also had pneumonic plague, so I'm concerned about the risk to public health. However, it was also reported that the people who were exposed to her are under medical observation. Furthermore, WHO guidelines make a conditional recommendation for post-exposure antibiotic prophylaxis. Since the incubation period of pneumonic plague is short, I think we will soon know whether this case will have any serious consequences. That's it. See you next time.
