How many dog owners actually sleep in the same bed as their dogs?
Some people say they love sleeping with their dogs.
However, some people also say that the dogs can actually disturb their sleep by barking at night or stealing the blanket, which makes their sleep fragmented.
I’ve never owned a dog or shared a bed with one, so I wonder if that’s actually true.
I came across a study that sheds light on this issue.
This study was conducted by researchers at the University of Toronto and published in the scientific journal PLOS One.
In this study, both the owners and their dogs were equipped with sensors to measure their sleep quality and to examine the relationship between their sleep patterns.
As a result, the owners’ sleep quality was not significantly different even when they shared a bed with their dogs.
Interestingly, the owners and their dogs became active at about the same time during sleep, and the owners tended to move before their dogs.
According to a news report about this study, one of the researchers said that it was the owners who disturbed their dogs’ sleep, not the other way around.

犬と一緒に寝るのが大好きだという人もいます。
しかし一方で、犬が夜中に吠えたり毛布を奪ったりして睡眠を妨げ、眠りが途切れ途切れになってしまうという人もいます。
私は犬を飼ったことも、犬と一緒のベッドで寝たこともないので、それが本当なのか気になります。
この問題を明らかにした研究を見つけました。
この研究はトロント大学の研究者によって行われ、科学誌PLOS Oneに掲載されました。
この研究では、飼い主と犬の両方にセンサーが装着され、睡眠の質を測定するとともに、両者の睡眠パターンの関係が調べられました。
その結果、犬と同じベッドで寝ていても、飼い主の睡眠の質に有意な差は見られませんでした。
興味深いことに、 寝ている間、飼い主と犬はほぼ同じタイミングで活動的になり、飼い主の方が犬より先に動く傾向がありました。
この研究を紹介している記事で研究者の1人が言うことには、犬が飼い主の睡眠を妨げていたのではなく、飼い主が犬の睡眠を妨げていたようです。
