https://wellaging.site/ Exploring the Aging Society 017 Why Do People Repeat the Same Stories? “You just told me that story.” As people grow older, they may repeat the same story again and again. But should we simply dismiss this as forgetfulness? Stories about work.
Raising children.
Hometowns.
Family.
People they loved.
Important moments in their lives. Stories that are repeated may carry deep meaning for the person telling them. We do not speak only to exchange information. Sometimes, behind a repeated story may be a simple human wish: “Please listen to me.”
“Please understand me.”
“I am still here.” Conversation can also be a way of recognizing one another’s existence. For 37 years, I have worked in elderly care in Japan and have met approximately 3,000 older people. I do not want to present what I have learned as “the answer.” Instead, I want to pass these experiences on to the future as “questions” that can help us think together about the aging society ahead. That is the purpose of my series,
“Exploring the Aging Society.” Rather than stopping someone by saying, “You already told me that,” perhaps we can listen a little further. “What did you feel at that time?”
“What happened after that?” Beyond a familiar story, we may discover a part of someone’s life we have never known before. Let us explore the aging society together—and create a society where people can live happier lives. I love the future.
