【Exploring the Aging Society 060】
Thinking About Sleep Through the Air in the Bedroom
When we think about better sleep, we often focus on bedding, lighting, or noise.
But what about the air in the bedroom?
We continue breathing throughout the night.
Temperature, humidity, ventilation, and airflow are all part of our sleeping environment.
For older adults in particular, sensitivity to heat and cold and the body's ability to regulate temperature may change with age.
That is why we should not rely only on a single “ideal” temperature.
We need to observe how the person actually feels and sleeps.
In care settings, this means looking beyond the thermometer: facial expressions, sweating, bedding, breathing, nighttime awakenings, and how the person feels when they wake up.
Sleep does not exist only inside the bed.
The air in the bedroom is also part of the environment that supports a person's sleep and daily life.
Tonight, when you enter your bedroom, take a moment to notice the air around you.
