Is Sleeping Longer the Same as Sleeping Well?
Good morning. This is Rikyu, welcoming you to Well-Aging Hour, our morning walking radio.
“How many hours did you sleep last night?”
When we talk about sleep, we often focus first on time. But there is another question we should value:
“Do you feel rested this morning?”
Time spent in bed is not the same as time spent asleep. And sleeping longer does not necessarily mean feeling adequately rested. Alongside getting the sleep we need, we should pay attention to how we feel when we wake and whether we feel sleepy during the day.
Sleep in later life varies from person to person. In care settings, observing that someone was asleep should be accompanied by another question: “Does the person feel they slept well?”
Check sleep duration. Listen to the person’s sense of rest. Look at their daytime life.
To me, supporting better sleep is part of helping people live each day in their own way.
This morning, why not ask yourself:
“Do I feel well rested?”
