【Exploring the Aging Society #95】The Sleeping Environment
10-Part Sleep Care Series | Understanding Daily Life Through Sleep
Is Your Sleeping Environment Right for You?
Did you sleep comfortably last night?
We often pay attention to sleep duration and nighttime awakenings.
But how much do we know about the environment in which we sleep?
Room temperature, humidity, lighting, noise, air quality, odors, bedding, and sleeping posture may all affect sleep.
Just as importantly, a person needs to feel safe and comfortable in their sleeping environment.
Throughout my 37 years of experience in elderly care, I have supported many older adults during the night.
Looking back, I wonder whether we paid enough attention to the individual conditions that helped each person sleep comfortably.
For example, nighttime lighting and sounds from care activities may interrupt sleep.
However, necessary assistance and safety precautions cannot simply be eliminated.
The challenge is to balance safety, dignity, and restful sleep according to each person's needs.
I am currently exploring the relationship between sleeping environments and sleep through observations and monitoring technology.
Changing a sleeping environment does not necessarily guarantee better sleep.
Observe the environment, listen to the person, and evaluate the changes.
Improving the sleeping environment means supporting the person's daily life.
From Nighttime Care to Sleep Care.
Episode 6 of our Sleep Care series.
To understand someone's sleep is to understand their life.
